In this post, I will Walk you through some of the most impactful things you can start doing even during your course and immediately after completing it.

Why does this matter? Well, many people take a digital marketing course for different reasons. Some want to get a job in the field, others wish to promote their own business online, and some are aiming to manage an in-house marketing team.

Then there are those who want to learn how to hire and manage freelance marketers for their business. And, of course, some people take a digital marketing course simply because their friend is doing it.

Top 6 Things You Can Do After Learning Digital Marketing

As a digital marketing trainer, I have observed a lack of planning and strategic thinking among students joining digital marketing courses, and even among those who have completed such courses elsewhere.

With over 18 years of experience in training within the digital technologies space, I believe my suggestions will add value to your learning journey. Below my suggestions and a plan specifically to help you succeed in digital marketing industry.

So below is detailed guide on what you can do during/after completing or learning digital marketing skills:

1. Research and Apply for Digital Marketing Jobs

Research and Apply for Digital Marketing Jobs

If your institution is not providing placement or job opportunities, your first goal should be to start researching and applying for digital marketing jobs.

The roles you can target initially include SEO Executive, Content Writer, Thumbnail and Social Media Content Designer, Video Content Creator, Backlink Specialist, Facebook Ads Specialist, Google Ads Specialist, Landing Page Creator, WordPress Expert, etc. Starting with these types of job profiles is a good way to begin your career.

As a digital marketing beginner or fresher, you can expect to earn between 10,000 to 15,000 rupees per month initially. Some companies may hire you on an internship basis, while others may offer a stipend for a few months. These companies want to test your learning potential and passion for becoming a digital marketer.

So don’t worry about salary initially—your first goal should be to learn as much as possible about your job roles, become an expert, and take on as many responsibilities as you can to accelerate your learning.

Also don’t focus on saving money right away; focus on learning fast and building professional network. After 6 months or 1 year of experience, you’ll start earning 20,000 rupees per month, if you started with 10,000 or more, but salary also depends on the interview performance.
To find a job, there are various strategies you can utilize, such as:

  • Optimize your LinkedIn profile effectively so potential employers can find you as a digital marketer.
  • Search for digital marketing jobs in your area on Google and use platforms like LinkedIn, indeed, and Naukri.com. Make sure your profile is on these platforms.
  • Network with people who are already working in digital marketing roles or in companies/corporates.
  • You can also approach your digital marketing trainer for referrals and company details in your area.


Note: Most of the time, you may not find your desired job in your local area, so you might need to relocate to bigger cities like Bangalore, Pune, Chandigarh, Gurgaon, Delhi, Ahmedabad, etc. Relocating to a new city can be uncomfortable, but to gain knowledge and experience, you need to be in a competitive environment.

Is digital Marketing certificate being important for the job?

Digital marketing job roles are highly practical. Having a certification is a bonus and can give you an edge, but it’s not enough on its own to crack an interview. During your course, you may have worked on assignments such as guest posting, website creation, banner design, etc. These are all valuable experiences you can showcase.

Even if you don’t have official certifications, you can still complete free certification courses offered by platforms like HubSpot, SEMrush, and other digital tool companies. These certifications can also be valuable and make a positive impact.

Why a Job?

You might be thinking, Why should I get a job? After completing a digital marketing course, freelancing can be a great way to kickstart your career. You could also start your own blog and begin earning online. Better yet, create content and grow a YouTube channel to share your knowledge and build an audience.

Here’s the answer:

You’ve just completed your digital marketing course. I don’t know exactly what you’ve learned, but I assume you’ve learned about Facebook Ads, Google Ads, WordPress, Content Marketing, Email Marketing, SEO, etc. and that you’re familiar with tools like Google Search Console, sitemaps, website audits, keyword research, Facebook Ads Manager, Google Ads Manager, Ahrefs, SEMrush, and others.

But being aware of these tools and concepts is one thing. You need hands-on experience. Completing a 6-month digital marketing course and passing the final assignment is only 20% of the knowledge you need.

The course is just your foundation. Through a job, you’ll build upon that base. My suggestion is to not introduce yourself to the market with just half knowledge. Gain practical knowledge, hands-on experience, and learn how the industry works.

Once you have at least 1 to 2 years of experience, you’ll be good to go.

Another reason to start with a job is that it provides financial stability. You’ll start earning money even if it’s a small amount and gaining confidence.

If you start blogging, YouTube, or offering services full-time without prior experience or business knowledge, initial failures might discourage you, making it harder to grow.

That’s why it’s important to first gain experience, create results for others, get appreciated, build confidence, save some money, invest that money in a laptop, internet, and camera, and then start exploring other streams of income like freelancing, content creation, and local services along with job.

2. Create Your Portfolio Website

Having a portfolio, professional, or personal website or blog is important for all types of technology professionals. I personally recommend this to almost every student these days, especially those in tech fields.

For digital marketers, having a personal or portfolio website is essential. It should showcase your digital marketing profile, include a contact form, outline the services you offer, and highlight your work experience.

This website will be visible 24/7, allowing potential clients or employers to see your skills at any time and connect with you.

You can also include the link to your website in your LinkedIn profile and resume. When someone reviews your profile or resume, they’ll be drawn to your practical experience and tangible work samples.

In an interview, you can confidently mention, “I have my own website,” which demonstrates initiative and professionalism.

Another key aspect is blogging. On your website, it’s important to write and publish content that resonates with your target audience. This could include small business owners or digital marketing agencies looking for full-time employees or freelancers. By consistently posting relevant content, you’ll position yourself as an expert, and when people need digital marketing services, they’ll contact you.

Your website is not just a portfolio; it’s a valuable asset and an extension of your online presence. You can utilize it in various ways to build your brand and connect with potential clients or employers. For more details, check out the posts below.

Additionally, once you start receiving traffic through blog posts or other content, you can monetize your website with affiliate products and display ads. This can become an additional source of income or a side hustle alongside your job. Even dedicating your weekends to this effort can be enough. While it will take time, within 1 to 2 years, you’ll be able to build a solid income stream alongside your job.

Once you complete your digital marketing course – or even during the course – try to create a website. I recommend using WordPress.org, but you can also consider platforms like Wix, Weebly, or Squarespace, depending on your convenience.

3. Build Freelance Profiles

Freelancing is one of the best ways to utilize your digital marketing knowledge and a great way to earn money online. I understand that, initially, you might not feel fully prepared or confident enough to take on freelance work, and I wouldn’t recommend jumping in right away.

However, creating a freelance profile is important because it allows you to explore the types of digital marketing projects available, how bidding works, and how much money is typically charged or allocated for certain tasks.

You can also add your freelance experience to your LinkedIn profile and resume. When switching jobs or applying for higher-paying positions or senior roles, showcasing your bidding knowledge can set you apart.

Many digital marketing agencies today acquire clients through platforms like Upwork, LinkedIn, email marketing, and direct outreach. Having knowledge of these methods will not only help you get freelance work but can also play a crucial role in your career advancement, helping you get promoted or even secure a senior position in a company.

For example, if you’re skilled in technical SEO, such as improving WordPress website speed or conducting website SEO audits, you can start exploring such projects.

While I’m not suggesting you start doing it immediately, once you’ve created your website, gained some job experience, and started getting traffic and you can begin understanding how these projects work and how projects are delivered. Then with at least 6 months of experience, you’ll be in a much better position to start bidding and exploring online or remote work opportunities on platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, Guru, and Freelancer.

So why not start gaining knowledge about that during or after completing digital marketing course. This will give you a competitive advantage, and if you’re interested and have the time, you can also take on freelance projects alongside your job.

4. Start Creating Content

Content is a important part of digital marketing and daily basis practice. If you’re a digital marketer but not creating content, you’re missing out on opportunities to showcase your skills, stand out in your role, or even get promoted.

For freshers, interviewers or employers often look for candidates who have taken the initiative during their training or afterward to build practical experience.

Creating content such as social media banners, advertisements, videos, articles, and infographics, and sharing them publicly on platforms like YouTube, LinkedIn, or Instagram is essential in today’s job market.

In the age of AI, producing high-quality and impactful content has become easier than ever. With tools like Canva, ChatGPT, or video editing software, you can create professional-level content, even as a beginner.

If you don’t have your own blog, publishing posts on LinkedIn or contributing to industry-related forums is a great way to gain visibility.

Your content serves as evidence of your creativity, skills, and potential, especially for employers assessing freshers. It’s not just about creativity but also about showing your understanding of trends, platforms, and how to engage audiences effectively.

To stand out, consistently showcase your work and experiment with various forms of content. Whether it’s a thought-provoking article, an engaging video, or a viral infographic, your content on your social media profiles can give you a competitive edge and help you get better and further job opportunities.

Think about it—would you hire someone to build your social media presence if that person doesn’t even have their own online identity? The same applies to employers and clients.
That’s why it’s important to create and maintain professional profiles on platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, and even Quora.

Start connecting with digital marketing influencers and other experts in the field. Engaging with them not only expands your network but also provides valuable learning opportunities.

Begin by understanding the challenges they face in promoting their business online, generating leads, and increasing sales.

When you gain insights into the pain points of small businesses, you’ll be able to create better strategies and offer solutions specific to their business needs and budgets. This not only builds your confidence but also helps you get your first projects.

So start locally by working with businesses in your community, and once you’ve built some experience, you can expand internationally using freelance platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, or Freelancer.

To get started, try to meet as many small business owners as you can and learn how they’re currently promoting their business. Identify gaps in their branding or marketing efforts and think of ways you can add value.

For instance, offer to create their Google Business Profile or Facebook Business Page for free. These small steps help you build connections, establish trust, and educate business owners about the immense digital opportunities available to grow their businesses.

If you take these steps during your training, it can be even more beneficial. You’ll be able to ask targeted questions in class, seek advice from digital marketing trainer, and discuss content strategies that can help specific businesses. This real-world application of knowledge will set you apart.

Even small efforts like these make a big impact. For example, if someone in your locality wants to promote their business online, develop a website, or generate leads—whether it’s through Facebook Ads, Google Ads, Content Marketing, or SEO—you want to be the first person they think of.

To achieve this, you need to stand out by doing things differently. You can’t remain comfortable in a routine job and expect opportunities to come to you. Instead, use your free time wisely.

Think of yourself as a brand. Build your reputation, showcase your expertise, and optimize your profiles on platforms like LinkedIn or Google so that when someone searches for a digital marketer, SEO expert, or content creator in your area, your name is among the top results.

By taking these proactive steps, you’ll establish a strong foundation for your career as a digital marketer. Success in this field is all about creativity, consistency, and marketing yourself effectively.
